Being born too small is one of the main reasons babies end up in the survival unit and can die.

With more than 40,000 newborn babies dying in their first month, getting the right nutrition before and after babies are born is crucial.

Mums can find out the latest advice including what best to feed their babies and young children from the health information wall in the heart of the village called ‘Swasthya Kantha’ and from their community health workers.

Background

Britain is working with the Government of Odisha, one of India’s poorest states, and UNICEF to save the lives of thousands of mums and babies.

When it comes to the topic of nutrition, many people often think of boring salads that include iceberg lettuce and hothouse tomatoes. Eating healthy does not have to be negative. Simply learning about nutrition can actually open you up to a world of food choices. By using these great tips to enhance your efforts to live a healthy life, you can truly appreciate your food.

If preparing raw fruit and vegetables is too difficult or time consuming for you, consider buying ready made juices. Juices provide vitamins and minerals without the hassle of pealing and chopping. Drinking juice with a straw will minimize tooth decay.

When your children clamor for french fries, feed them a baked potato instead. To make it fun and appealing, try cutting it in two and turning each side into a funny face with cherry tomatoes, peas, and low-fat cheese.

Watch your consumption of sugar if good health is your goal. Many people believe that fruit juice is a healthy replacement for sugary soda drinks. This is not always the case, as some fruit juices contain even higher amounts of sugar than a regular soda. Knowing this, it is vital that we know what we consume.

You should ensure that you are getting enough selenium in your diet. Selenium is a mineral which acts as an antioxidant. It will improve the elasticity of your tissue, as well as keep your skin looking healthy. Selenium protects your body from toxins and also helps skin. Some foods that have a lot of selenium are Brazil nuts, eggs, garlic, tuna, and wheat germ.

Fiber is one of the most important nutrients and has many health benefits. If you are aiming towards adding fiber to your diet, make sure you focus on soluble fiber as this type absorbs cholesterol and keeps the body well protected. Men need a daily ration of 30 grams of fiber, and women can get by with 20. Diets filled with fruit, vegetables and whole grains will help you get the fiber you need. However, if that is not possible, you can supplement your intake with OTC fiber pills.

Don’t assume that your food choices are nutritious. Chances are you will not find any whole-grains in seven-grain bread, so it is actually not as healthy as it may seem. Pay close attention to the list of ingredients when you choose foods, instead of depending solely upon the sometimes-misleading info on the face of the package.

Cut down on meat and add more fruits and vegetables to your diet if you want to develop better nutritional habits. Meat provides protein to your diet, but you should treat it as a side rather than the main focus of your meal.

Make sure to eat the right levels of fats, proteins and carbohydrates in your diet. Your protein intake should amount to 30% of your daily diet; carbohydrates should account for 50%, and fats should account for 20%. Do not consume all your carbohydrates from sugars, however.

You can sneakily trick yourself and others into eating more healthily. This is useful if your children are picky eaters, but sneaking healthy ingredients into your own food works great, too. You can sneak beans into baked goods, or grate vegetables to mix into sauces. You will tend to eat better, and no one will know your little secret.

As you can see, eating a balanced, nutritious diet is easy and fun. There is a lot of room for creativity in the world of food, so it is a wonderful way to enhance your quality of life without limiting yourself. These tips are only the beginning to a new, healthier you!
